Artist presenting work during final Junior Critique 2024
Artist Statement
In my work, I create interactive pieces that involve multiple sensory experiences. I aim to make a space for the viewer to enter, interact with, and become a part of. My work emphasizes the human experience, specifically childhood, grief, the intersection of technology & humanity, memory, and how we manage our relationships. I create sculpture, video, photo, jewelry, and painting based on emotions and personal experiences that form the way I view the world.
My work draws attention to texture as a way to stimulate tactility. I find comfort in using gel medium textural paintings, chasing and reppousé, enameling, coarse ceramic bodies mixed with bright, multicolored glazes, experimental short films based on poetry, digitally edited photographic works, and more recently, textural illustrations and animations.
My current thesis work shows the duality of the human experience through observing relationships. I analyze the complexities of human emotions and empathy from my own experiences as a way to find a place in the temporality of life. I create with texture and fluidity to engage tactility, motion, and contrast. I use emphasis and variety to highlight specific elements over multiple concepts. Themes of the work include the process of memory creation, reflection on time’s passage, identity, and the give-and-take nature of relationships.
